A mural of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and a third Cuban revolutionary hero in Centro Havana.

Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara was a hero of the Cuban Revolution and is glorified as a Marxist hero all over the island to this day.

His likeness can be found in numerous murals, paintings and signs, big or small, in homes and on buildings, wherever you may go.

An Argentinean – Che is a colloquial term meaning ‘mate’ or ‘pal’ in his homeland – he came to Cuba to help overthrow Batista and was a close friend of Fidel Castro.

He was involved in the Cuban government until 1965, when he resigned his posts. He later went to fight in Bolivia and was captured and killed – possibly by the CIA.

Since 1967, there has been a ‘Be Like Che’ campaign in Cuba to encourage the revolutionary ideals among its people.
